21 Uses for Vodka

21 Uses for Vodka

1. To remove a bandage painlessly, saturate the bandage with vodka. The solvent dissolves the adhesive.

2. To clean the caulking around bathtubs and showers, fill a trigger-spray bottle with vodka, spray the caulking, let set five minutes and wash clean.
The alcohol in the vodka kills mold and mildew.

3. To clean your eyeglasses, simply wipe the lenses with a soft, clean cloth dampened with vodka. The alcohol in the vodka cleans the glass and kills germs.

4. Prolong the life of razors by filling a cup with vodka and letting your safety razor blade soak in the alcohol after shaving. The vodka disinfects the blade and prevents rusting.

5. Spray vodka on vomit stains, scrub with a brush, then blot dry.

6. Using a cotton ball, apply vodka to your face as an astringent to cleanse the skin and tighten pores.

7. Add a jigger of vodka to a 12-ounce bottle of shampoo. The alcohol cleanses the scalp, removes toxins from hair, and stimulates the growth of healthy hair.

8. Fill a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle and spray bees or wasps to kill them.

9. Pour one-half cup vodka and one-half cup water in a Ziplock freezer bag, and freeze for a slushy, refreezable ice pack for aches, pain, or black eyes..

10. Fill a clean, used mayonnaise jar with freshly packed lavender flowers, fill the jar with vodka, seal the lid tightly and set in the sun for three days. Strain liquid through a coffee filter, then apply the tincture to aches and pains.

11. Make your own mouthwash by mixing nine tablespoons powered cinnamon with one cup vodka. Seal in an airtight container for two weeks. Strain through a coffee filter. Mix with warm water and rinse your mouth. Don't swallow.

12. Using a q-tip, apply vodka to a cold sore to help it dry out.

13. If a blister opens, pour vodka over the raw skin as a local anesthetic that also disinfects the exposed dermis.

14. To treat dandruff, mix one cup vodka with two teaspoons crushed rosemary, let sit for two days, strain through a coffee filter and massage into your scalp and let dry.

15. To treat an earache put a few drops of vodka in your ear. Let set for a few minutes. Then drain. The vodka will kill the bacteria that is causing pain in your ear.

16. To relieve a fever, use a washcloth to rub vodka on your chest and back as a liniment.

17. To cure foot odor, wash your feet with vodka.

18. Vodka will disinfect and alleviate a jellyfish sting.

19. To remove cigarette smoke in your home or office mix one part vodka and three parts water and spray the clothing, then launder and let dry.

20. Pour vodka over an area affected with poison ivy to remove the urushiol oil from your skin.

21. Swish a shot of vodka over an aching tooth. Allow your gums to absorb some of the alcohol to numb the pain.

In homebrewing, vodka is often used in place of water in the carboy airlock. It is sterile and relatively tasteless, and if for some reason it gets sucked into to carboy it will not contaminate the wort, only raise the ABV slightly...

It does evaporate rather quickly though, so it will need to be replenished more often than water. Therefore, use cheap vodka...

I finally bought a case of vodka yesterday that I plan not to touch for ten years or so. If there is a social breakdown, it will have plenty of uses, barter for sure being one of them. If there isn't a social breakdown, I will have delicious 2020 vodka at 2010 prices.

Thanks Old Herb Lady, for giving me so many good reasons to not feel guilty about adding all of that vodka to my stash.:applause_

Hope you bought the good stuff; not much worse than cheap vodka, except cheap whiskey! I never was much of a fan of vodka until I tried the high-end stuff. Even Smirnov's tastes like rubbing alcohol to me, not that I've tried rubbing alcohol!

Well, here's another use.

My mother was very fond of cut flowers in the house,

And would put a slosh of vodka in the water.

She claimed they "kept" far longer that way.

Now, here's the rub.

She would send my dad down to the liquor store

To buy the cheapest 5th they had.

He was a reasonably put together old guy,

And the liquor store people would raise their eyebrows.........

I tend to have fairly inexpensive taste with regard to most alcoholic beverages (wine, rum), but I bought the vodka that I enjoy most, Kettle One. I don't really know where it falls on the scale of cheap to expensive, but I figured that with such a large quantity, I should buy my favorite.

Ha - I did the same thing a year ago. I'm not as hoity as you - I went with Absolut. It won't last 10 years - I'm down to 6 or 7 bottles already. You'll find occassions to drink it. I heard this quite a few years ago - grain alcohol is the antidote for wood alcohol poisoning. I think the body can only absorb so much alcohol and by diluting the wood alcohol with grain alcohol you are able to pass the poison with less damage. I'm sure Google has sources.

That would fall into the 'good stuff" category in my book! I think rums are much more forgiving, with regard to price, than any other distilled liquor.

This vodka stuff has me cracking up !
My husband got $100 gift card for a liquor store (Christmas present)
Then he got $100 gift card to the casino.

We don't drink or gamble . (Already crazy enough)

So we figured we would go and buy some cooking wines, sherry,
stuff like that. Now we're gettin' vodka. HA !!
Still haven't figured out what to do with the gambling one.

Depends on how toxic you think denatured alcohol is... the main purpose of the additives is to keep people from drinking it, they should be relatively harmless for topical use. However, if you're a purist and don't want the stuff touching your skin, these uses from the list are still OK to substitute denatured alcohol for:

Quote:

19. To remove cigarette smoke in your home or office mix one part vodka and three parts water and spray the clothing, then launder and let dry
That's 7 uses. If you think topical use for Denatured alcohol is OK, you can add all the rest except for #11 (mouthwash) and #21 (toothache wash). However, most of the topicals can be accomplished using cheaper ispropyl (rubbing) alchohol instead of (relatively) expensive Vodka.

I'll say it again - I'll save my Vodka for trade/drinking/medical purposes.

IN A SHTF SCENARIO ANTISEPTICS LIKE ALCOHOL
WILL BE HARDER TO FIND THAN ALL THE VODKA
THAT PEOPLE WILL HAVE

THEREFORE

IF YOU GOT ALL THAT VODKA IN HIGH DEMAND
IT WILL BE A HUGE BARTERING ITEM
BECAUSE YOU CAN DRINK IT AND USE IT AS
AN ANTISEPTIC.

#20. vodka doesn't bind to urushiol for poison ivy, I've tried that.

#16. there are other ways of using vodka like that to cure mild sickness, general idea is to keep the body very warm for as long as possible, hopefully overnight.

occamsrazor, I wouldn't dare to use a good XO on shoes, it is way too good for that.

I'll add.

A shot of vodka before a good dinner is a very powerful relaxant + increases appetite. Try it before a fatty soup, a chicken noodle from real chicken...etc. Vodka will work with shishkebab, dumplings and other meat.

Best drink mix - vodka and cranberry juice.

Oh, and #1 - vodka is one of the top ways to get into a girls' panties.

It seems to me that this is one of those times where it makes more sense to spend the time and money learning how to make something rather than just stockpiling it. Potatoes are easy to grow and one of their main "issues" is that it is very easy to grow more than you can eat before they spoil. If I can plant 50% more potatoes than my family can eat and turn the surplus into a long term storage item, that's the way to go. Especially if TEOTWAWKI comes along and I can't just go buy cheap alcohol any time I feel like it!

This sounds odd, I'd really like to see the source also.

From what I understand, methyl alcohol could kill you by alcohol poisoning (LD50 is around 0.30%), so adding ethyl (grain) alcohol to dilute out the methyl would probably only make the person drunker as they absorb them through the intestines.

The real danger is that when your body breaks down methyl alcohol into formaldehyde - really bad news - the body quickly converts this into formic acid - a process that kills the individual cell.

Best thing to do is never try to drink methyl (wood) alcohol!

For once I can agree with razor, Pure Grain is a better alternative for an all around SHTF alcohol product. Buy it by the pint or half pints. IF you can find 190 proof buy it, many states have banned 190 and you can only find lesser version, proof wise, 151 or 190. Vodka is PGA dilluted.

rurounikitsune 01-25-2010 04:15 PM

Re: 21 Uses for Vodka

Sad to see so many recommending isopropyl. Not because of anything wrong with them, but because the gov't has made ethanol prohibitively expensive through tax upon tax.

Ethanol is a nice natural product that is easy to make and has a nigh-infinite multitude of uses, even diluted.

In a SHTF scenario, if order breaks down and you don't fear being prosecuted for running a distillery, starting one is simplicity itself. There are books on Project Gutenberg that outline the process. If you can grow anything fermentable, build a fire, acquire a few necessary pieces of equipment, and keep things clean (the absolute hardest part), you don't need a stash of over priced, over taxed liquor.

The conventional treatment of methanol poisoning involves administration of ethanol: this keeps the alcohol dehydrogenase busy with ethanol, so that the methanol can be cleared ... also known as grain alcohol and often to any beverage that contains ... loss of control (being unable to stop); physical dependence and ...
http://www.economicexpert.com/a/Alco...ydrogenase.htm - Cached - Similar

so apparently the grain alcohol stops the exact process that you describe - the alcohol dehydrogenase in your blood stream will catalyze the ethanol to acetaldehyde leaving less available to convert the methanol into formaldehyde.

Piece of history from WWII.

My dad was with Chennault and the 14th airforce (Flying Tigers) in China.

Part of the care & maintenance of the P40's they were flying then

Involved 55 gallon drums of grain alcohol. As he was a mustang

2nd lieutenant, he was given the job of installing one of said drums into

The officers "club", a shanty at the edge of the airfield, with

An appropriate spigot.

It is reported that the attempts to use grain alcohol and various

Chinese flavorings to replicate Western flavors were varied and

Interesting, with occasional awful results..........

That being said, I keep a couple gallons of Everclear around,

Just for G.P.
